Nordic Resonance

Nordic Resonance is an immersive sound performance inspired and shaped by Shetland’s environment. Created by Maltese sound artist and percussionist Renzo Spiteri and Scottish flautist Richard Craig, the work draws on environmental recordings, live electronics, acoustic sound, and improvisation to carry the sonic character of Shetland into different listening contexts.

At the geographic crossroads of Scotland and Scandinavia, The Shetland Islands are distinguished by a landscape of natural magnificence, bird calls, whale song, the force of the wind, and the ever-changing moods of the coastline and the sea. Developed through deep listening to these elemental soundscapes and extended engagement with the Shetland environment, Nordic Resonance explores how sound can carry the presence of landscape beyond its place of origin. Using sound as a lived experience of place, Renzo and Richard bring the atmosphere of this northern landscape into the performance space, offering a space for presence, resonance, and reflection, and inviting audiences to slow down and listen closely.

Presenting Nordic Resonance in Malta and Glasgow creates a powerful contrast between Shetland’s expansive acoustic openness and Malta’s and Glasgow’s dense, vibrant, urban soundscapes, prompting reflection on how place shapes what – and how – we hear and listen.

The performances will be followed by artist talks/Q&A sessions with the musicians, during which audiences will be encouraged to offer feedback, thoughts and comments about the project and its developmental process. The session in Malta will be moderated by artist, curator and academic Vince Briffa.

Nordic Resonance in Malta is presented as part of Spazju Kreattiv 2025/2026 programme. The work is supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.
